Let’s say that you want to make a Birthday cake for a child that loves Mickey Mouse. For this example I would suggest stating with a white cake. If you are artistic enough you could start by airbrushing a black outline of Mickey and then fill in the colors much like you would in a coloring book. This sounds easy but if you haven’t done a lot of free handed drawing or airbrushing I would suggest using a stencil. You can find many stencil sites on the internet that are made specifically for the cake decorating airbrush. The cheapest way, of course, it is to make your own stencil. All you need is a coloring book and an Exacto or utility knife. Then cut out the sections that you want to color and outline the colors in black to connect them together and complete the image.
Before you start airbrushing any design on to a cake I would suggest you practice airbrushing it onto paper first. This will help you to determine which elements you wish to incorporate or remove, what steps you will take and in what order. Keep in mind that when you are spraying color and overlap them the result will be a color that is a combination of both.
Cake decorating with an airbrush does take time and practice before you become comfortable in using it. The best way to learn is to just play around and have fun with it. Practice some basic shapes and lines and do some experimenting with different color combinations. There are many spray-on edible colors available for airbrushing and are mixable if a custom color is needed. Make sure the airbrush will only be used for painting edible colors and should not be used for any other propose. There are many different cake decorating airbrush kits available.
